Favorite RPG Maker Games

So, what are your favorite games made with RPG Maker? I think there is alot to learn from others who develop on the platform, knowing what has been done well previously in order to try to capture what you love in other games when making your own.

The game that first inspired me to create games for RPG Maker was a game on steam called Demons Roots. Unfortunatly I can’t link it a it is possible even the censored steam version is probably inapproriate for these forums. But it was remarkably well written for a game of that nature and learning it was made by 1 guy in RPG Maker, it inspired me to start using RPG Maker myself. Another favorite of mine is both Fear and Hunger games. The production values in those games so far above what I can create it is mind blowing. I also liked Corpse Party (Seriously, why are all my favorites M rated?)

I also really liked Omori, if that is an RPG Maker game. Sure looks like it though. I also played some of Witch’s house, or at least its PS5 remaster. I think that one was originally made with RPG Maker. I think I played my own games more than anything else combined for testing purposes, but I have found I really like the general gameplay of a classic RPG Maker game.

What games do the rest of you enjoy? Is there any I havn’t played you might reccomend? I am on the search for games similar to those I develop myself. Which is mostly long RPG’s with a focus on both turn based combat and story. I do actually really like classic JRPGS. I also really like horror games. Especially classic haunted house games or games surrounding the paranormal I am seeking both well known games and obscure ones.

None that I’ve seen yet, unfortunately. All the popular RM games are weird quirky things about stuff I can’t relate to and have little interest in, like teenage depression or weird horror. All I want is some high quality Final Fantasy at home, but those games never end up anywhere near the front page, so to speak. We live in an era where rpg making software is mostly used for games that barely count as rpgs.

So far, Star Shift Rebellion!

Another one I really liked that wasn’t made by me though is Deep8, story really sucked me in for some reason:

Oh, this game was also fun, I had a good time!

There is some truth to that. Most I know of seem to be horror games without combat.

I think you would like my next project, Chronicles of Avineria. Which is kinda a classic dnd inspired fantasy rpg where you can pick the class of the main character. The story is kinda a mindf@@k though. With the main characters not sure if their life on earth or the fantasy world she ends up in is real, as she seems to shift between those realities sometimes. I was kinda inspired by works like the Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz in how some people from Earth has counterparts in Oz in those stories. The gameplay is mostly classic rpg maker with exploiting the elemental weakness of enemies giving you an extra like in Persona.

I kinda try to make the sort of games I enjoy playing.

What games do the rest of you enjoy? Is there any I havn’t played you might reccomend?

  1. Gargantuan (Short RPG)
  2. BUGGERWORLD (Medium length RPG)
  3. Ambassadors Of The Future (Decently long RPG)
  4. Soaring Machinariae (Action Game)
  5. Melancholy Republic (All story)
  6. Rakuen (Just story)
  7. Shinobiya (Side-scroller stealth ARPG, Japanese only)
  8. AbsentedAge: Squarebound (SRPG & ARPG mix)

(These are what I can recall at the moment XD )

I also really liked Omori, if that is an RPG Maker game.

It is.

I rarely know for sure whether something is made in RPGMaker, unless it’s prominently noted on the store page or something.

An example of a good game is Ara Fell, which looks very RPGMaker-like (but, apparently, was made in Unity – I just looked it up now). There’s also Eternal Senia, which looks fairly RPGMaker-ish, but I’m not sure whether it is or not.

One decent game that I’m certain is made in RPGMaker would be The Lost Art of Innkeeping.

Eternal Senia is definitely rpgmaker. The dev since went on and made a mobile game though.

This one was really cool too:

Actually wait, this is probably the best rpg maker game of all time:

It’s so good that Google’s AI overview can’t even get it right!

Why is my first association the Stanley Parable? I guess I am expecting something meta.

I think it was RPG Maker originally and then later was ported to Unity as the ‘enhanced edition’ and tbh it was not as good. Ara Fell is probably my fav RM game and made me want to get into game dev. I admit I don’t play a lot of RM games though.

Could be, I suppose. It was the enhanced version that I looked at earlier.

Dude whatchu saiyan there’s like a million RPGs go visit RPGMaker.net I accept none being good but there’s a ton of traditional and nontraditional RPGs to pick and hate. XD

…and love, yeah.

Beloved Rapture, LISA the Painful. Oh and every single thing Ephiam makes is a banger: Venaitura, Scarmonde, To Aerthen.

I also liked Eternal Senia, free game on Steam, from Japanese developer. Pending to play Kissed by a Star, Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. Need to check out Beetle Ninja too. A friend also recommended me Wood Ocean, very weird game haha.

And I must name-drop Paradise Blue.

Omori is made with RPG Maker MV.

Witch’s House is made with VX.

Some of these indie horror games confuse me because they look like RPG Maker but are made with Wolf RPG instead. In fact I’m blanking right now. Mad Father was Wolf RPG right?

Oh I got pending to play DEEP 8 too, I had played the first demo. Sometimes I forget game been finished for years now (btw, it’s an RPG).

Ugh, I love ABL but man… Line’s End is never coming out.

It has aged a bit too, like, it’s definitely not as groundbreaking today as it used to be. But I’d give it a go, as long as you can live with the fact that it’ll never have an ending you’re good, and also some of the starting areas kinda suck a bit, just because they’re kinda vanilla random encounters filler things and you have just one guy, and whatnot. Idk it always feels painful to me when you’re starting a game with just the basic RM2000 mechanics.

A game I consider similar to ABL but it’s definitely more obscure is Monstrous Wars. Very ambitious RPG Maker 2003 game. It’s inferior in writing, because unlike ABL which is kind of very good with what it’s doing, Monstrous Wars is a bit chaotic, does many things at the same time and it’s very confusing. But guy also did some impressive animations here and there. It’s also unfinished.

Sunset is great, but it’s 100% story driven, enters into the realm of walking simulator or almost like a visual novel. No combat and mostly just following sequence triggers. But it’s a beautiful game and the story is great.

Ara Fell has a very long story behind. It was started in RM2003, then moved to XP, there it stood for a while until they went back to 2003. And I think there were multiple other versions. There’s a blog post from BadLuck that covers it better than what I’d do off my head. Ara Fell Blog :: So. It's been a while. :: rpgmaker.net

Man, I could talk all day or try to do some work on my game. But I love this thread.

Idk man, these files don’t look very RPG Maker to meeee

I kid. Also didn’t know they were doing more stuff. Kinda sad it’s for mobile, I hate playing things on a phone it gives me pain.

if I had to mention my favorite game it’s defiantly Ib,
I have huge thing for Ib. if I recall it’s my first rpgmaker to play
I do love another games such as Oneshot, the crooked man, Ao ani and angels of death.
there’s a recent demo I tried and it surprised me how good it is called VERISMO

I watched a friend play through The Strange Man series along with a couple other games from Uri. Ended up a fan of hers, even if I’ve never played them myself.

The stories are very good, the presentation has things that I appreciate a lot, like in Boogeyman there’s a couple of “angle changes”, made by changing maps. I just think that’s crazy genius but also such a simple stupid idea I loved it to pieces. My favorite from Uri tho is Mermaid Swamp. I just remember it having a far more eerie mood for some reason. It’s more crude and less technically impressive, but yeah, the mood…

I’ll take a look at VERISMO later. :eyes:

EDIT: Also, uh, speaking of indie horror. Mad Father is so far the game with the nicest visuals. Pocket Mirror is close but I also have bias hahaha, I didn’t like Pocket Mirror as much. Sorry! But I still like it! Again I watch a friend play through these games, I’m The Lazy Man! La criaturaaaaa…
