Letters in an MZ project usually arrive in the same message window as the shopkeeper’s small talk, in the engine font. Epistolary turns each one into a document the plugin draws instead: paper stock, handwriting, wax, folds and postmarks.
There isn’t an image file anywhere in it. The handwriting comes from 84 glyph skeletons driven by a pen model, and the paper, seals, waxes and damage are all generated. That’s the point of doing it this way, because a letter from a sender you invented this afternoon ends up as specific as one that shipped with the demo.
On top of the drawing there’s a delivery system and a forgery check, so a letter can arrive, be inspected, and be wrong.
It installs as four plugins and the order matters. Only the fourth has parameters, the first three are libraries. It checks the order at boot and writes a plain language error naming the file that is out of place, rather than failing somewhere obscure twenty minutes later.
