[MZ - Playtest] Ezekiel: a dark-fantasy narrative RPG

Ezekiel - the cemetery at night

The Church says Ezekiel’s sister is dead. Her records say she was moved eight days after her burial.

Ezekiel is a slow-burn, story-first RPG made in RPG Maker MZ about a grieving brother who won’t stop asking questions. It follows a paper trail out of his rain-soaked parish and into places that shouldn’t exist on any map.

What’s in it

  • About 5–7 hours of story (estimate), with more than one ending
  • A custom lighting plugin (lanterns, torches, per-map ambient light) and per-area colour grading
  • A timeline-based battle system: you can see the turn order ahead and plan around it
  • Investigation, quiet exploration and a bleak tone; it’s a mystery, not a power fantasy

Playtest v0.1.0 is open (free, Windows): Ezekiel (Playtest) by slebbes@hotmail.com

I’m especially looking for feedback on pacing (where it drags), clarity (where you weren’t sure what to do next) and whether combat makes sense without a tutorial wall. There’s an optional 3–5 minute form on the page, or just reply here.

Content note: death, grief, violence, illness. Disclosure: some art was made with AI tools and edited by hand; the maps mostly use licensed RPG Maker tilesets.

Happy to answer questions about how anything was built in MZ, and to try your projects in return.
