I’ve been trying to figure out how to let players choose between different language versions of my game on Steam, but I’ve been having some issues. I’ve contacted Steamworks Support, but I haven’t received a response in two weeks, so I thought I’d ask here in case anyone has dealt with something similar.
The main issue is that each language is a completely separate build of the game, with its own executable. I don’t have multiple languages within a single build. I could’ve added an in-game language option using a plugin, but not everything would’ve been translated. Things like menus, icons, and other elements would’ve remained untranslated, and I wanted to localize the game as thoroughly as possible. However, I still want to give players the option to launch the version in their preferred language.
I’ve been trying to set this up through Steam’s language settings, but whenever I create a branch for the game, Steam seems to automatically select a combined branch that includes both versions. I’m not sure if this is related to the problem, but the Spanish version doesn’t install properly.
I’m also getting a depot manifest error. When I select the Spanish version on Steam, nothing gets installed.
Honestly, I don’t necessarily need to use Steam’s language settings to achieve this. I’d be fine with any solution that lets players choose which version to launch, such as a pop-up menu when starting the game that lets them choose between different versions, similar to how some games let you launch the Definitive Edition or the Legacy Edition.
Has anyone dealt with a similar setup or knows how I could get this working? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
