RPGM Studio: a modern, lightweight, and cross-platform editor for RPG Maker XP, VX, and VX Ace!

RPGM Studio: the RPG Maker editor you’ve always wanted! :star_struck:

Hey everyone! Meet RPGM Studio, a native, lightweight, super fast, cross-platform desktop editor made specifically for RPG Maker XP, VX and VX Ace.

The best part? You can open your original RPG Maker projects directly, with no destructive conversion. Reopen them in the original editors whenever you like and you won’t lose a single byte of data. And it runs 100% natively on macOS, Windows and Linux!

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL

The goal was simple: get rid of all those everyday frustrations of making games.

Global search, bulk replace and instant filters

  • Filter pretty much anything in real time: maps (by name or ID), events on a map, event commands, every tab of the database (items, animations, you name it).
  • Find every single spot, in maps or Common Events, where a Switch or Variable is read or triggered, or where a specific asset (graphic or audio) is used.
  • Bulk-replace Switch and Variable references, or rename graphic and audio files across your whole project (or just a single map).

Supercharged events: multi-tile, templates and stacked

  • Events bigger than 1x1 tile: set the width and height of any event so it covers a larger area. When you reopen the project in RPG Maker, it turns into a bunch of copies of that event filling the area you defined.
  • Event templates: save doors, chests, enemies, save points or NPCs as a template with one click, then drop identical copies wherever you want in your project.
  • Stacked events: fun fact! RPG Maker supports stacking events natively, but its own editor won’t let you do it. RPGM Studio does, and everything carries over when you reopen the project in RPG Maker.

See your game right on the map

  • No more counting Movement Route steps in your head! Events with movement routes draw their path right on the map.
  • Passability overlay: flip a toggle and every non-walkable tile lights up, so collision bugs have nowhere to hide.
  • Show Picture with drag and drop: placing HUDs, menus and illustrations by typing x/y coordinates blindly is over. Just drag the image with your mouse, watch the coordinates update live, and see exactly where it will land.

A real script editor

A powerful built-in code editor, VS Code style, with clean and tidy file management. It’s perfect if you use version control like Git.

Native mkxp-z support

mkxp-z is a free, open-source, cross-platform game runner for RPG Maker XP, VX and VX Ace. It replaces the old Windows-only Game.exe with a modern engine that runs your games natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, with great performance and up-to-date Ruby support.

RPGM Studio plays nicely with it: you can configure it from the editor and launch your playtests straight through it.

Light and dark themes

Last but not least, the interface is modern, clean and responsive, and it comes with both a light and a dark theme, so you can work on your game just the way you like.

DOWNLOAD

RPGM Studio is a preview release, and we’d love your feedback to make it better. That’s why it’s completely free during this early period!

To grab it, just head over to https://rpgm-studio.web.app and download the version for your operating system.

Quick heads up: since this is a preview version, please make a backup copy of your game folder before opening your main project!

macOS users: the app doesn’t have an Apple developer certificate yet, so on first launch macOS will block it (saying it’s “damaged” or from an unverified developer). No worries, here’s the fix: drag the app into your Applications folder, open Terminal and run this command:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/RPGM Studio.app"

Questions, bugs or ideas? We’d love to hear them, so don’t be shy and drop a comment below!

Happy making! :sparkling_heart:
