Yes, the auto-tiles can be a problem. When I was working on my own custom engine/editor for RPG Maker, the Autotiles thing was what took the longest to get the AI to understand the logic of it, but finally got past it!
There’s one funny thing about AI generated art that baffles me. It’s both generic and inconsistent at the same time.
Two extremes in one!
I use AI for some assets, in particular character/battler art. I have NOT had good luck with tilesets, walk sprites, etc though. I might try my luck at generating some, then refining them heavily in photoshop though.
You can avoid the inconsistent style aspect by using an AI tool with stronger image reference capability, and asking it to adhere to the style of an uploaded image in the prompt. Just look at this RTP-style face set:
Note: The quality is ass because I didn’t bother to make the background transparent AND because I threw this together before I implemented better up/downscaling algorithms like lanczos-3 into my tileset/spriteset assembler. I can upload a better version later if anyone cares.
But as you can see, the style is consistent, and these are all AI faces.
Without saying whether you should or should not use it, I’ll just note that a while back, my experiments demonstrated that these programs do not in any way understand about image size or resolution.
The anti a.i. pushback is mostly ludites who go around brigading social media posts, sometimes even labeling posts “a.i. slop” if your grammar is off or if they just plain don’t like what you say. As a developer, you should just do what you need to do so you can finish your project, and if the game isn’t disliked for use of A.I., it will be disliked for some other reason. You can’t please everyone.
