We’ve been here for a bit now, it might be hard to gauge if you only speak one language like me (I only speak English) do you think it’s fairly accurate? Any kinds of phrasing, format, grammar, or wording it may seem to consistently have problems translating? Especially specific things like math or logic.
I’ve said before it’s really cool to be able to talk to people with different languages, but I also would like to know if there’s anything to take into account when communicating through it.
The one mistake I have seen it make is the translator will not accurately translate engine-specific terminology. What we call in English versions “Scroll Text”, a Japanese user wrote something that was translated to “Article Scroll” which caused confusion.
The Japanese posts that get translated into English as sounding very formal and I cannot tell if it’s intended by the original writer or that’s just how a translator writes it to be “safe”
Just saw a post from a Japanese person and the English version looked fine, which is not easy considering how Japanese and English differ. I lost my job in translation to Ai but I’ve got to see it’s decent
That was the main thing I was wondering about, if terminology was uniformly translated, and if it would help to reinforce the phrasing more like “the event command scroll text” so someone reading it as “the event control article scroll” would still be able to recognize it.
The casual speak (at least to me) seems pretty good for the most part, I wondered if it falls apart more if the speaker’s phrasing or wording are different from what the AI usually expects.
This is LLM’s big weakness, that it can’t handle things that are different very well. Being statistical in nature means it performs best on topics that are common and widespread, and breaks down for rare or niche topics.
I can’t give any detailed comment on the accuracy of the translation here, because it stopped working for me after about 3 days. But I think it’s probably good enough to communicate through, for the most part.
Still, as Gensun noted, there are clearly some things it breaks down on. I think it would be a good idea to carefully mark up posts so that the translator knows when not to translate – for example, always surround even the smallest code snippets (even just the name of a class or function) in backticks. I suppose you could use the same strategy for terms like Scroll Text? Maybe there’s a better way though.
I guess then it’s up to the Japanese person reading an English person to learn and know that Scroll Text means whatever other name they have for that function, and vice versa (and Chinese). Will take a while to know each other’s terms for things.
there probably should be a “for newcomers” section about the translator changing terms sometimes so everybody can be aware of it and be on the same page.
if it’s written like Scroll Text it could at least imply that it’s meant to be a specific term. But I’m actually not sure, are the Japanese and Chinese versions of RPG maker or action game maker written in all Japanese or Chinese or if there’s some English terms? If they’re all the one language then it might still be tricky.
I think as long as people are aware of it for now, they’ll know to ask for clarification if something sounds a bit off.
