Why delete the old forums? They’ve been a massive pillar of the RPG Maker community for nearly a decade and a half, not to mention being a reliable source for tutorials and all manner of resources for budding developers. The RPG Maker Web forum layout is so much better than whatever you guys have got going on here too.

Why delete the old forums?
- The old forums was operated by the old publisher-company of RPG Maker, who are no longer publishing RPG Maker (where as this new forum is directly under the supervision of the Japanese Dev-Company of RPG Maker)
- The old forum was run according to the directive of the English publisher, not the Japanese Devs. Some things publishers want, that devs don’t. They have different philosophies. (This forum is where the say of the devs reigns supreme.)
- The Japanese Devs can better listen & respond to users here, without a middle-man company complicating the process. (Especially thanks to the AI-translation tech implemented here, allowing the Japanese devs to be able to read everything we post in English, since it instantly appears as Japanese on their end).
- The Old forums still being around would compete with this new official forum. (In search results, in user attention, and userbase.)
- Keeping up the old forum even as read-only, would require constant maintenance & security updates. (So user info & DMs don’t get leaked, e.t.c. Hence It’s legally best to delete it.)
Does that make sense?
P.S, this is just what I’ve gathered. As a common peasant of a user here. ( ´ ▿ ` )

- It would still create the problem. AI translation is a recent technology; it wouldn’t be able to integrate it into old forum technology built about 15 years ago. (At least, not without it being too expensive to develop and costly to maintain.) Additionally, this new forum is an international forum, whereas the old forum is language-specific. Forcing Japanese users to abandon their native forum to come to the English one, which already has an established user base, isn’t fair to them.
If they have the right to shut it down
I don’t believe so. The legal rights to the forum belong to Komodo (the old publisher). The dev company may have the leverage to shut it down (since the IP is theirs), but not the leverage or right to completely take it over and remove the publisher’s footprints and involvement. Nor would that be free from similar criticisms.
- If you’re willing to make a whole new website from scratch you are potentially able to update the code…

Pause. (There’s a severe disconnect here.) My points 1 & 2 were not related to code. They were related to intellectual property (or ownership rights), and goals/mission of the different companies involved here.
So inform me what you comprehend my points 1 & 2 were in my first/initial comments (in this thread), and how your response about updating the website’s code, is in any way, an intelligible solution to those.
Sadly this is not how it works,
In the end even if the devs own rpg maker, Komodo / Degica Own the ownerships of the Rpg maker forum.
it might be possible that GGG tried to negotiate with Degica/ Komodo to get ownership of the old forum but degica / komodo might have refused to do so. Thus closing the old forum down.
Might also be that degica asked to much of a prices for the data.
plus even if they want to keep a read only version, in the end they cant if Degica / Komodo refuse to let them have ownership of the data.
Sadly sometime those things happens

Yes, this is possible, but Japanese law is verrryy tricky. Both GGG and Degica are Japanese companies, and they have to be VERY wary of what they divulge because the Anti-Defamation Laws in Japan are no joke.
If GGG openly says, “Oh, we couldn’t transfer the forum because of Degica refusing to let us have data,” they would get sued into oblivion because even if they were right, they are tarnishing the reputation of Degica.

The whole thing of not being able to tarnish the others reputation goes both ways. For all we know, Komodo offered to give them the entire forum, and GGG turned it down, and now Komodo is stuck not able to say anything due to NDAs.

I’ll be honest, considering the two groups and how they’ve handled things in the past, I know which one I trust to care about the community more.

if the old forums being able to compete with this one is a “reason” for the old forums being deleted, then its just even more proof this is a bad decision. you win the competition by providing a better, stronger alternative, not by just torching the competition down. this wont make people think youre better, itll just make them even less willing to try your alternative

This move was being prepared for years, ever since GGG started cutting ties with Degica due to rampant corruption that favored one modder circle who monetized and obfuscated modding.
This has been a problem for a long time, and GGG was made aware of it. Since then, they have been moving away from overseas publishers to do the job themselves. This includes handling communication with the community directly, aiming to never repeat the mistake or allow such situations to happen again.
