Given that Steam costs 100$ to publish a game, and I make many short games… it would be quite costly for me to put them all up on Steam, separately. Hence, I’m working on an Arcade environment in RPG Maker MV, that can launch all my (future) games, from inside one project.
That way, I’ll just need to publish one game on Steam, and then I can keep adding more and more games & content to it over time.
I got inspiration for this idea looking at Gotcha Gotcha Games publishing RPG Maker MV/MZ, and then releasing infinite number of DLCs on top of it. XD
I figured I can similarly publish one game on Steam (which would be ‘False Arcade’ or ‘False Series Arcade’), and then infinitely keep adding content & games into it, like through DLCs. Costing me 100$ just once, for publishing the base Arcade.
The environment for the Arcade initially was only suppose to have a couple of Arcade machines. Then I kept expanding it bit by bit… where now, it’s practically a whole anime/gaming convention… (-‸ლ)
There is a concert/stage section where character’s sing,
a cosplay/costume section for dressing up the playable characters,
a podcast/announcement section for skits & silly banter between characters,
a gallery/imageboard section for Fan Art & any other random visuals,
A mini-games section for playing chess, pong, snake, e.t.c
A cinema/theater room for watching video or movie content
…and a bunch of different areas & sections, for delivering different types of content within the game.
Since technically, this project will carry all my future works & content. I will be posting in this thread of everything & anything I do relating to game development.
Feel free to look into my previously released games and play any you find interesting:
…I’ll eventually be porting them one by one into the Arcade. (To the best of my abilities.)
My information might be outdated, but I thought that $100 was a one-time “upgrade to publisher account”, so it would only be one payment to publish as many games as you want? The way you’ve phrased that sounds like you think it’s $100 per game.
Might still be too costly, especially if your games are free, but still…
Thus, in theory, you can publish a “collection” and make each game a DLC.
At RMAsia, we have a system that funds creators to help them pay publishing fees. Many developers started their first step from here. But, once you get past it, you will find it much easier. So, don’t let that $100 discourage you.
Offtopic but yeah, 100 per game, I believe that will not change since at its time, it was their safest way to gate all the slop that was coming to Steam, while still letting anyone publish a game. It puts some pressure on making people be sure enough about what they want to put in the platform.
$100 might sound like a lot, but I believe it’s the cheapest thing you have to pay while making a game. And despite how crowded Steam is, it’s not as awful as Google’s Play. That one is not even worth 25 per account.
In the vein of adding small interactions around in the Arcade, before release. I added playing the piano, that I had put there as a decoration in the dining area at the Arcade.
That’s all. ( ´ ▿ ` ) Here’s the tutorial on the controls on navigating within the imageboard. (The following is placed as an image inside the imageboard gallery.)
I showcase every single one of these in a video on YouTube:
While all of them are not guaranteed to work for every game in the Arcade (since not every game is optimized for each one, and they can hide some important detail in the visuals, and some would not match the theme of the game). They will be at-minimum, accessible to play with in the Arcade. (¯▿¯)
And with some games, I intend to force a particular color filter.
Given that I can make any sort of software in my game… I decided to make the mother of all softwares! A Desktop Operating System! XD (It’s W.I.P with placeholder visuals.)
While I develop the Desktop Operating System… system. XD
I searched around in the Arcade for a spot to put a computer in. So I have an excuse to implement the tech in the Arcade somewhere, and so… after some remodeling, this is where I’m going to house the ‘False OS’.
I wanted at-least 4 icons to interact with on FalseOS desktop. So apart from file-explorer & CPU-info.
I decided to have an icon for web-pages, where I can host in-game websites & blogs.
And lastly, perhaps an icon for e-mails, featuring inspiring messages I’ve received over the years?
Added a mini-game to FalseOS, where you bomb important columns of a building to bring it down. ●~*(メ` ロ ´)
[Am I gonna get into copyright trouble with this? XD ]
P.S, ignore the sound effects, still need to work on the sounds.
Something I’ve been aiming to achieve as a capability in my projects, but wasn’t able to up until now… (╥﹏╥) A 1st person 3D labyrinth explorer! Except since 1st person gives me headache, (>﹏<) I try 3rd person with over-the-shoulder view.
I’m working on another minigame to put in FalseOS, where you guard/defend a core on top of a tower, as a mob of enemies climb up and try to displace it.
You basically have to grab them one by one, drag them away from the core, and throw them off the edge.
