Hey guys, I want to know how do we properly test our game? I mean when we have long cutscenes, quests, etc, where we don’t want to run the whole thing but just a specific part. Any suggestions on the testing workflow is appreciated. Thanks.
I do a couple things:
- If the cutscene doesn’t require any switches or variables to be triggered in order to run, I just move the “player starting position” right before the cutscene and let it play based on its normal trigger (usually auto-run).
- If the cutscene requires switches/variables to be triggered, then I’ve got a separate save file of my game outside of that location or near that part, to test them. I just load the save then, and test the cutscene.
- I can/will also just put in an event ahead of the cutscene to put the switches/variables at what I want in order to test the cutscene as well. I move the starting location, create an event next to where I start, walk onto it, then have the cutscene trigger.
- Utilize my “dev map”. That is, I have a map that exists strictly for testing things in my projects. Testing mechanics, gauntlets of fights, animations, or… whatever. I can move my “player starting position” into this map and test whatever I need to test. Usually just copying and pasting things into there.
Not sure how helpful that is to you, but generally this is how I test all sorts of things. Not just cutscenes.
In the case of “testing if a dungeon works properly”… Just run the dungeon. Try to break the dungeon eventing any way possible (switch puzzles being worked out of order, for example, or trying to bypass the puzzles, or whatever).
If the cutscene is entirely in a single event page, I think the easiest way is probably:
- Add a Transfer command at the very top that places the player on the map where the cutscene should trigger.
- Select all the event commands (Ctrl+A).
- Do a test run (Ctrl+R or right-click → Test).
- Don’t forget to delete the Transfer command when you’re done.
If it’s not entirely in a single event page, I think Tai_MT covered most of the other options.
